Traveling for comfort

Posted On 2009-05-26 , 3:18 PM

Getting away from it all and taking a relaxing holiday is exciting but it’s the getting there that’s often tiring.

I used to dress up for traveling but I soon learned that flying on an aircraft for hours on end is not conducive to dressing that way. So I learned what works and what doesn’t; after all being comfortable should be a top priority when traveling to your vacation destination.

I understand some of you may still want to look dressed up when traveling. If so, choose clothing
that won’t restrict movement, such as, flowy skirts for women or khaki pants for men, and always remember that comfortable footwear is a must. As a woman, I suggest a pair of dressy flats for the ladies.

If wearing sweatpants, hoodies and runners is just too casual why not try a pair of comfortable jeans, a simple lightweight shirt and shoes you can actually walk or even run in (if, like us, you sometimes have to run to the next departure gate).

If heading someplace tropical there really is no need to bundle up in warm clothing, just a sweater to keep you warm from departure to arrival as well as on the airplane. Another tip is to go easy on the footwear (I, however, am not too good at this one myself, I am a lover of shoes and tend to take quite a few pairs with me) I have learned though that I rarely wear them all and sandals as well as a pair of comfortable runners is generally enough for warm weather traveling.

If heading someplace colder, you’ll of course need warmer clothing. But bundling up in bulky winter gear for the plane ride is unnecessary instead just pack a warm sweater or jacket in your carry-on and put it on when leaving the airport upon arrival in your destination.

Sears CanadaThe best option is to choose lightweight comfortable clothing that fits but isn’t too tight and be careful that fabrics aren’t rough or itchy. Dress for the destination and not the departure, you are after all escaping for a break and will only be exposed to the departure city weather from vehicle to airport.

Girls Shopping Weekend Getaway

Posted On 2009-05-21 , 3:03 PM

If you are ever looking for a girlfriend’s getaway; why not try a mini weekend vacation geared toward shopping.

This past Friday my sister and I packed up the car and headed off on our 5 hour road trip for our girls weekend. We had been planning this 2 day getaway for awhile, a little mini vacation so to speak, with no boys allowed but lots and lots of shopping.

As discussed in a previous entry my sister will be moving from Alberta back to Newfoundland in early July making this a special time for us to spend together because getaways will happen less frequently after she leaves to move back home.

Dreams Resorts & Spas - Grand Opening SaleWe were a little weary of traveling on a long weekend (Victoria Day, Canada) as we anticipated that it would be busy. However, it wasn’t quite as bad as we had expected.

The car ride is normally quite boring but with music blaring and singing along together we laughed, giggled and really enjoyed the time.

We booked an inexpensive hotel and checked in Friday evening then headed out for a quick supper and an early start to our shopping.

Last Week: Save up to 50% off hotels during Memorial Day Weekend at Hotels.com!

The next morning we headed out to start our full day of shopping (outlet malls here we come). We grabbed a great breakfast, parked the car and walked around buying something in almost every store. The sales were great. By about 3pm, we had almost our whole budget blown and were feeling slightly tired. We grabbed a lovely Italian meal and started out again for another few hours.

Before we knew it, the weekend was over. It was a great getaway and an inexpensive way to spend our girl’s weekend. It’s time to start planning our next one which will have to be in Newfoundland when I take my trip back there; a spa getaway which will include all 3 sisters and maybe our mom as well.
  • Tip#1: Booking an inexpensive hotel leaves more money for shopping & other activities.

  • Tip#2: Set a budget before you go so as not to over spend. Girls shopping without a budget can be a scary thought.

  • Tip#3: Start out early in the morning to avoid crowds. By mid-morning the shops are beginning to get quite busy.

  • Tip#4: Wear comfortable clothing and proper footwear

  • Tip#5: Finding shopping sales generally takes time. We took in only the outlet stores so we found sales easily. I would recommend researching common sale dates (like end of season sales) if shopping somewhere other than outlet malls.

  • Tip#6: Tips for inexpensive hotel hunting can be found on our Holiday Accommodation page or visit our online booking page to make a reservation through one of our affiliates.

Happy Shopping and Vacations to All!
